Hey High School Playwrights!

It's the 13th Annual Scirocco Drama Manitoba High School Playwriting Contest, and we're looking for your plays. Download the Rules and Guidelines.
The Manitoba Association of Playwrights and Scirocco Drama are holding a search for high school students writing plays for the thirteenth year to follow up the great success of last year’s twelfth contest. It’s simple: write a short play of about fifteen or twenty minutes, with a minimum of three characters, and send it to the MAP. A panel of theatre professionals will read them and select five.
Students will work with a dramaturge to rewrite scripts as necessary. The plays will be rehearsed in the spring then produced in May 2013 at the Tom Hendry Theatre (Warehouse Theatre) with votes from the audience taken each night to decide on the winners! The votes will be tallied and the winners announced on the second night of the two evenings presentation.
Plays may be sent by regular mail or plays can be emailed to playcontest@anguskohm.com or mbplay@mymts.net. If you want the play returned, please include a self addressed stamped envelope. The entries must be postmarked no later January 11, 2013. Those selected will be notified no later than January 25, 2013. Due to volume, only those selected will be notified.

Freemen of the Plains

posted Feb 7, 2012

A MAP fundraiser. A reading of Freemen of Plains by David King. One night only: Monday, February 20th (Louis Riel Day) at 8:00 pm, at the Gas Station Theatre.

This is what David says about the play:

Freemen of the Plains is an historical and sometimes hysterical retelling of events that occurred at the Red River in 1816. A young man arrives at Fort Douglas from Halifax, expecting to be retained as a clerk by the Hudson Bay Company. He is upset to discover that the Fort has been taken over by the Northwest Company and that the Governor has been killed along with several others at the Battle of Seven Oaks. Unwilling to work for the Nor Westors, the young man takes up with some Metis Buffalo hunters who try to make him feel at home there, in the expectation that Lord Selkirk will send soldiers to retake the fort, which would, as well, allow the Scottish settlers to return from Jack River to where they retreated after being terrorized by North West Company sponsored mercenaries. He soon becomes involved with a Metis woman who works at the fort as a translator and he is beginning to adapt to his new life; at least until winter comes and the issue of survival forces him to abandon his principles and thereby incriminate himself.
This Play weaves fictional characters with real historical figures such as Jean Baptiste Lagimodiere and his wife Marie Ann who was the first white woman to settle out west. It was originally produced in 1974 in what was then the Manitoba Theatre Workshop (now PTE) It was very successful; but it was really nothing more than an extended sketch with regional relevance. When Rory Runnells who heads the Manitoba Association of Playwrights suggested a staged ready as a fundraiser for Map, I was motivated to expand the story introducing new characters and also providing a more thoughtful analysis of the historical significance. The graves of some of the characters in this play can be viewed at the St. Boniface Basilica in WInnipeg. Though it is clearly a comedy, it does what it can to honour their contribution to paving the way for a vibrant community of the banks of the Red and Assiniboine River.

The cast includes: Wayne Buss, Terri Cherniack, David Gillies, Ernesto Griffith, Toby Hughes, Tom Keenan, Erin McGrath, Dave McLeod, Harry Nelken, Tracey Nepinak, Brian Richardson, Gordon Tanner. Directed by Ross McMillan

Tickets are $15. Reserve tickets - 942-8941 or mbplay@mymts.net . All proceeds go to supporting MAP playwrights programs.

My Affair With George Bernard

posted Jan 9, 2012

From the Harry S Rintoul Award-winning writer of King's Park and Remember the Night

Dates: Jan 24 – 27 at 8pm, Jan 28 at 2pm
Venue: Aqua Books, 274 Garry St

The Manitoba Association of Playwrights presents a staged reading of My Affair with George Bernard by Daniel Thau-Eleff. Dramaturgy by Chris Gerrard-Pinker. Featuring Doreen Brownstone and Ross McMillan.

She acted in three of his plays. They went for bicycle rides together. He told her she was his “best and dearest love.” And then it was over. What happened between Florence Farr and George Bernard Shaw?
Now, things have gone topsy turvy. Florence has come back to Shaw's home after his death. She is conducting a seance, reading from his plays and reminiscing, hoping to invoke the spirit of George Bernard.
In a collage of historical fiction, Florence is finally going to tell it all.

Admission is by donation. Shaw Fest passes accepted. To reserve tickets or for more information - 942-8941 or mbplay@mts.net. Reservations are recommended.

Since 2001, Manitoba Theatre Centre has been presenting an annual Master Playwright Festival, choosing a playwright with a significant body of work and, along with many other local theatre companies (big and small), presenting productions, staged readings and films of this writer's plays.
Featured writers have included Bertolt Brecht, Samuel Beckett, Harold Pinter, Michel Tremblay, Caryl Churchill, David Mamet, Arthur Miller and others. In last winter's StrindbergFest, MAP presented a staged reading of Miss Julie at the Gates, a Strindberg-inspired play by local playwright Ross McMillan at Aqua Books. Following on the success of this sold-out reading, MAP is participating in this year's GBShawFest, presenting another staged reading of a new play by a local writer, My Affair with George Bernard, by Daniel Thau-Eleff.
My Affair with George Bernard is very much a work-in-progress. Daniel, Chris and the actors will probably be refining the script right until our first performance (maybe after too). The script contains excerpts from Shaw's plays The Philanderer, Village Wooing (which is being presented in GBShawFest by zone 41 theatre), Pygmalion (Shaw's most famous play, which was adapted into the musical My Fair Lady), Man and Superman and excerpts from letters written by Shaw to Florence Farr, an actress and writer who, many years ago, had an affair with George Bernard (as well as Yeats). And it's a seance.

Rory Runnells: Champion of the Arts

posted Nov 10, 2011

Janine LeGal has written a piece about MAP's artistic director, Rory Runnells, for the Prime Times.

Bring up theatre in this city and there’s one name that’s bound to pop up in the conversation: Rory Runnells. He’s been supporting it and living it in one way or another for almost 30 years.
Runnells is the artistic director of the Manitoba Association of Playwrights (MAP), its primary organizer and coordinator, and has been for most of its history. Formed in 1979, MAP is a non-profit organization that supports playwrights and playwriting in Manitoba.
Runnells, 61, was born and raised in Winnipeg and has, as long as he can recall, enjoyed going to the theatre. He studied creative communications at Red River College, but his passion for theatre took hold early on and hasn’t let go since.
The elusive Runnells doesn’t like to talk about himself but when it comes to his work, there’s no hesitation.

Winnipeg Theatre Workout

posted Nov 10, 2011

Cory Wojcik is organizing a monthly gathering for actors, directors, and writers who want to hone their craft. Cory says: "'When dancers aren't doing a show, they go into the studio and dance. When actors aren't doing a show, they go to the bar'" Break the myth!

WTW is a chance for actors, directors, and writers to get together to 'work their muscles'. The idea is simply this:
Actors, directors, writers meet once a month (the first Sunday) and break off into groups (as either assigned or perhaps you already have a group you'd like to work with, doesn't matter). Each group has 45 min-1 hr to read, rehearse and present their scene. Feel free to present with movement, reader's theatre, whatever.

This is NOT for performance. Just a chance for actors and directors to practice their craft and for writers to hear/see a scene they are working on. The scene can only be about 3-5 minutes.*

COST: NOTHING!

A great chance for a playwright to test a scene she's been working on. The next session is December 4th.

For more information, check out the Winnipeg Theatre Workout facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/groups/62059024702/

Open Door update

Staged Reading of "Littlewoods"

posted Oct 21, 2011

Thursday, Oct 27, 7pm at the Rudolf Rocker Cultural Centre

You are invited to a presentation (as a staged reading) of The Littlewoods by Norwegian playwright Jesper Halle, at 7:00 pm on Thursday, October 27 at the Rudolf Rocker Cultural Centre, 3rd floor, 91 Albert Street (above the Mondragon). The play will be directed by Jens Boutrup, who has been in Winnipeg working with MAP and playwrights on dramaturgical practice.  MAP has assisted Krista Jackson – Zone41 Theatre, in this presentation, which features a cast of ten actors. The play won first prize in the Hansen Nordic Playwriting Competition in 2001, and was premiered in New York in 2003, directed by Jens Boutrup. The Competition jury said of its choice:  "A play that grabs us, makes us think and ask ourselves what we really remember, or don't remember, or don't want to remember of our own childhood.  It's a play that leaves nobody untouched."

Mr. Boutrup's visit is sponsored by the Danish Arts Council, and continues MAP's relationship with Danish theatre artists over the past 15 years.

A Conversation with Jens Boutrup, Danish Director/Dramaturge on An Approach to Play Development, with Manitoba Playwrights.
Tuesday, October 25th, 7:00 pm – Aqua Books, 274 Garry Street

MAP presents A Conversation with Jens Boutrup for the 2011–2012 season opener of "Evenings With Manitoba Playwrights" at Aqua Books - Winnipeg's Cultural City Hall. Visiting Danish Director and Dramaturge Jens Boutrup earned his B.A. Theater and History, University of Copenhagen, in 2000; Directing Lab, New York University, Summer of 2000; M.F.A. Directing, at Brooklyn College, CUNY, in 2003; and, has been Artistic Director/General Manager at Bornholms Egnsteater in Denmark since 2008.

Jens Boutrup will be joined by six Manitoba playwrights to discuss the results of a unique seminar  – the development of a new approach to play dramaturgy – that was recently held in the Rory Runnells Studio. Though aimed at playwrights, this innovative approach will be of interest to all writers dealing with issues in their work – specifically, how to build a positive technique for the development of one's writing.

The evening will start off the second year of readings & conversations by and about Manitoba playwrights and playwriting. With special thanks to Kelly Hughes of Aqua Books.

(Four of the plays performed in Winkler fell into this category.)  We are introducing the idea to MAP members much earlier this time, so you will have longer to develop or finish a play.

The process will be as before: MAP will collect information from playwrights who want to offer a play for performance by a Manitoba Community Theatre. MAP will then provide ACT with a list of playwrights and synopses of the plays that are available, and ACT will publish the information on their website. Connections will then be made directly between writer and production company. (This worked very well for several MAP playwrights in 2011.)

The plays will then presented at ACT-Fest 2012, which will be held in Neepawa, MB, next year, from May 4th to 6th.

A second “performance door” also has opened: Gimli Theatre Association wants to set up a weekend of Manitoba plays (which can be plays that are presented at ACT-Fest in Neepawa). More information on that venture will follow later in the fall.

The next step is for you to inform us of a play or plays you want to present. For each play, list the following:

  1. The play title
  2. A brief synopsis
  3. Running time
  4. Number in the cast, plus their sex and ages
  5. Your name, phone number, and email address

(No. 5 is particularly important, because production companies who see your synopsis may want to email or call you to get more information.)

Send your information by November 1, 20ll, to mbplay@mymts.net. Insert this as your Subject line: “Script for Made & Played in Manitoba.”

Note that there is no restriction on length this time, other than that the play must run for a minimum of 10 minutes. Also remember you must be a paid-up member of MAP to take part in this event.

The 11th Annual Scirocco Drama Manitoba High School Playwriting Competition

posted May 27, 2011

Look Out Stuffy Old Pros, a Gang of Talented Teenaged Playwrights Has Arrived! Exploding onto the stage of the Tom Hendry (Warehouse) Theatre at 8:00 PM on June 9 and 10, 2011, it’s the Scirocco Drama Manitoba High School Playwriting Competition, featuring five hilarious, touching, exciting, and thought-provoking new one act plays written by teenagers, directed by professionals, and performed by a cast of all ages.

This year’s plays are:

  • A Cheesy Twist by Victoria Isbister of Nelson McIntyre Collegiate (Winnipeg)
  • Get Over Yourself (a musical!) by Elliot Lazar of Gray Academy (Winnipeg)
  • Everything’s Fine by Rebecca Schur of Steinbach Regional Secondary School, (Steinbach)
  • The Game Of Life by Caitlin Gannon of Tec Voc High School, (Winnipeg)
  • and Error by Logan M. Stefanson of Gimli High School (Gimli).

You’ll See: Great love, unrequited love, friendships tested, family squabbles, self-doubts, homophobia, divorcing parents, unkind strangers, medical emergencies, hospital hijinks, singing and dancing (to live music!), and an inexperienced angel locking horns with a devious demon over the soul of a dying man! And best of all, YOU will decide who wins the competition!

How does it all work? All five plays are performed on both nights. Each play is only 15 – 20 minutes long – so if you don’t like one, just wait a few minutes and a new one will start. At the end of each night, the audience will be asked to vote for their favourite play. Those votes will be counted and the results will be announced (and prizes awarded) on Friday night.

Don’t miss what is sure to be the most outrageously entertaining collection of plays written by high school students this year! The Scirocco Drama Manitoba High School Playwriting Competition is a presentation of the Manitoba Association of Playwrights.

A reading of Ross McMillan's play, "Miss Julie at the Gates", at Aqua Books, 274 Garry Street, as part of MTC's Strindbergfest.

Miss Juliet at the Gates shows us what might have happened had Strindberg come to Winnipeg to present Miss Julie with his company of actors, nursemaids, etc., in tow. Invited by a newly rich Winnipeg couple, who had seen a performance of Miss Julie while doing the grand European tour, Strindberg and company find themselves in what could be called a culture clash. Winnipeg playwright Ross McMillan examines what the audience expects, and what artists expect in return... Written and directed by Ross McMillan.

One performance only. Tickets are pay-what-you-can. This is a fundraiser for the Manitoba Association of Playwrights.

This is the question of what constitutes theatre.  Does theatre need to entertain any more than a painting needs to be beautful, and if it does not need to be entertaining,  do we need to send the audience on a roller coaster of plot and emotion?  If theatre is to show us the human condition why can't it use boredom as material?
